"Cushioned in the embrace of the Peace Now delegation, which went to Tunis (at the end of last week) to advise Arafat to tone down his pronouncements on Jerusalem in case the withdrawal process loses its dynamics, the PLO chairman declared that he and Rabin are partners."
In Thursday’s Yediot Aharanot, right-wing commentator Aharon Pappa contends that "anyone looking at government poliCies since Peres succeeded in tempting Rabin to change his declared policy, can see that the pats on the shoulder, the handshakes and the government’s defense of the PLO after every sabotage attack, constitute clear signs of partnership.
"It is the same partnership of interests created naturally when two sides reach a formal agreement. That was what also happened to the prime minister, after he was enticed to enter into a deal with the PLO. He reached a situation in which preserving his government at home obliged him to defend Arafat. He is certainly not happy to be called a ‘partner,’ but Arafat is right when he views him as a partner.
"One of the absurd results of the partnership between the killer of Jews and the Jews’ prime minister is the intention to allocate 10,000 guards to ensure Arafat’s safety when he enters Jericho. The State of Israel does not have to be concerned for his safety, nor for the security of PLO people.
"Even if it were possible to prove that he has changed his tune and ways (meanwhile it is not possible, and they are paying only lip service with statements here and there:even if one could prove Arafat has given up his dream of destroying the State of Israel; even if the Palestine National Council convened and revoked the murderous covenant that is its constitution — even then the State of Israel would not have the obligation to safeguard his safety, nor even allot one policeman for this task.
"There is not only bad taste in Jews protecting the life of the killer of Jews, there is also repulsive taste.
"The person responsible for the murder of children at Maalot, Avivim, the Aroy and Heran children and the Munich sportsmen, deserves no forgiveness from his potential victims.
"Arafat has enough guards of his own. A Jewish government protecting him when he enters the country via Jericho has not only lost its political way, but also the remnants of its Jewish and human morality."
