Holocaust policy for schools is altered
International Herald Tribune, 19 February 2008
The education minister on Monday softened a proposal by President Nicolas Sarkozy to make French 10-years-olds honor child Holocaust victims.
Sarkozy said last week that each student in the last year of primary school should adopt one of the 11,000 Jewish children from France killed in the Holocaust, learning about the selected child’s background and fate. Many psychologists, teachers and parents said the plan would be too traumatizing, and the idea had prompted nationawide debate.
Education Minister Xavier Darcos said the plan could be adjusted so that an entire class could collectively honor an individual victims (Associated Press)
