The U.K. would like Iceland to help the occupation and pacification of Afghanistan by contributing heavy air transport facilities. This was reported on January 17, 2007 by Mr. Gretar Mar Sigurdsson, the Director of Iceland’s Foreign Ministry, after talks with British officials. Earlier, Iceland’s Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, pledged at the NATO Summit in Riga that Iceland would increase its participation under NATO?s “peace-keeping? operations in Afghanistan, including air transportation. It was not revealed what type of items or persons Iceland would transport to and/or from Afghanistan.
