in Kol Ha’ir (weekend paper), 1 February 2002 [publ. in Middle East International, 22 February 2002]
I accuse Ariel Sharon of creating a process by which he will not only intensify the reciprocal bloodshed, but which is liable to start a regional war, as well as bringing about the partial or almost complete ethnic cleansing of the Arabs from Eretz Yisrael.
I accuse every Labour minister in this government of cooperating in the implementation of the right wing’s extremist, fascist so-called vision for Israel.
I accuse the Palestinian leadership, and primarily Yaser Arafat, of extreme short-sightedness, a perspective which has led it to become a collaborator in Sharon’s plans. If there is a second Naqba, this leadership, too, will be among its causes.
I accuse the Israeli military leadership, spurred on by the national leadership, of inciting public opinion, under a cloak of supposed military professionalism, against the Palestinians. Never before in Israel have so many serving generals, former generals and past members of the military intelligence, sometimes disguised as “academics”, been engaged in brain-washing the public. When the judicial committee of inquiry is established to investigate the 2002 catastrophe, these people will have to be investigated alongside the civilian criminals.
I accuse those who run Israel’s electronic media of giving the various military spokesmen enough access to affect their aggressive, bellicose and almost complete take-over of the public discourse. The military controls not only Jenin and Ramallah, but also Israeli radio and television.
I accuse those people, of all ranks, who issue blatantly illegal orders and those who diligently carry them out. The late philosopher Yeshayahu Leibowitz was right ? the occupation has ruined every decent element and has destroyed the moral infrastructure of Israeli society. We need to stop this march of fools and build a new society, purged of militarism, oppression and the exploitation, or worse, of other people.
I accuse everyone who sees and knows all this of doing nothing to prevent the approaching catastrophe. The horrors of Sabra and Shatila were nothing compared to what has happened already and what is going to happen to us.
