We were none the wiser when the information war actually broke out at the global level towards the end of the last decade. Most of us don’t know that we have already became victims of that war. We are like soldiers who have got hit even before they could begin to fight. And the war which is being waged is invisible – unlike the earlier, conventional wars. It deals with the demographics of Palestinian suicide bombers, their background, religiosity, political awareness, organizational attachments and motivations. It also deals with the social and political environment that contributes to their willingness to engage in a suicide operation, including the role and motivations of those who prepared them and sent them to carry out their deadly mission. The depth of this study provides students of suicide terrorism around the world with a template helping to determine whether particular attacks represented genuine suicide bombings or only appeared to be so.

Australian police chief links media raids to US-led “Five Eyes” spy network

Australian Federal Police (AFP) spent seven hours ransacking a News Corp political reporter’s home in Canberra, and eight hours poring over and seizing files at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Sydney headquarters.

In an extraordinary admission, the AFP’s acting commissioner Neil Gaughan blurted out that the real reason for the raids was to protect the information that the Australian police and intelligence agencies receive from their “Five Eyes” counterparts. Five Eyes is a top-level network of intelligence agencies dominated by the US that also includes Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

I suspect, for most American Jews—Israel has become the content of their Jewish religious identification. It has very little other content. I rarely have been at a Shabbat service where a rabbi gives a sermon where Israel isn’t a subject of the sermon. And typically, they are—the sermons are not in the spirit of an Isaiah, you know, who says, “My god, is this what God wants from you? Your hands are bloody; they’re filled with blood. But he doesn’t want your fast. He doesn’t want—he despises the sacrifices and your prayers. What he wants is to feed, to feed the hungry, to pursue justice and so on.” But that’s not what you hear from rabbis in the synagogues in this country. So, what I meant by that is that there’s much more to Judaism and to the meaning that you give to your Jewish identity than support for the likes of Netanyahu.

The physical destruction of Iraq’s infrastructure in the “Gulf War”

U.S. Secretary of State James Baker apparently warned Iraqi deputy prime-minister Tariq Aziz at their meeting of 9 January 1991 in Geneva, that is before the U.S. began bombarding Iraq, that Iraq would be brought back to the pre-industrial stage if it did not withdraw from Kuwait. The systematic bombing of Iraqi infrastructure and economic facilities corroborates this story.

Translating this warning into acts, the U.S. military forces targeted, disabled, destroyed or damaged major civilian infrastructure over the whole territory of Iraq, including most power plants and transmissions facilities, multipurpose dams, refineries, food-processing plants, food-and-seed storage warehouses, flour mills, a dairy-products plant, sugar refineries, a syringe factory, telecommunications systems, irrigation facilities, municipal water-treatment and sewage plants, a veterinary-vaccine manufacturing facility, civilian vehicles, roads, railways, airports, bridges and numerous industrial, commercial, educational, religious and cultural facilities. This act of barbarism by the United States awaits remedial.

An approach to economic sanctions based on the principle of solidarity with the victims and on norms of human rights may include humanitarian dimensions but should equally include elements of empowerment, such as asserting the rights of the victims. Among such rights figure particularly an entitlement to effective remedies for the unjustified harm they have suffered and which was caused by others.
